Dear Lyndonville Families,

There has been much in the news and on social media, (specifically on Snapchat), regarding threats against schools across NYS, including several schools in Niagara and Erie Counties, and two schools in Orleans County. Lyndonville has not been referenced in any of the threats.

As of today, state and local law enforcement and the FBI have ruled these threats as unfounded. While this is very good news to hear, we remain vigilant and prepared at Lyndonville Schools.

Our School Resource Officer (SRO) Deputy Jason Barnum meets with district administrators and me daily. He is in regular communication with his colleagues in the Orleans County Sheriff's Department and regional law enforcement. I am being briefed through multiple county, state and federal agencies. Regional school superintendents and SROs keep each other apprised of any issues within their districts. I am in communication with Orleans and Niagara superintendents almost daily, as well as two formal meetings each month.

In the event of a threat and/or emergency, I will update families. I must be clear, families will not be my most immediate first communication, because my top priority will be to assure the safety of our students and staff. At the earliest opportunity, I will communicate with families.

We ask that you please partner with us in monitoring your child’s social media. Remember, “see (read/hear) something, say something,” and please encourage your child to do the same. Please discuss the serious nature of making threats whether intentional or “just a joke.” Law enforcement takes these threats very seriously and will prosecute.

Your child’s safety is our top priority. We have safety plans and protocols in place and conduct multiple drills throughout the year to be as prepared as possible.

Never hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Sharon Smith

Superintendent of Schools
